Escape to Middlethorpe Hall in York this Winter for a Romantic Break

Middlethorpe Hall

Middlethorpe Hall is set in over 20 acres of parkland with an intriguing series of interconnecting walled gardens including a kitchen garden. Not only do guests feel the benefits of the country here, but they are also within 10 minutes drive of the centre of the City of York. This winter guests can enjoy the changing colours in the gardens, as trees and shrubs take on their autumn vibrance of rusts, golds and reds. Sink into comfortable sofas at the fireside, or spend the afternoon in a quiet corner with a book. Take a trip into York and visit the many attractions, gaining free admission to local National Trust properties during a stay at the hotel (subject to opening times) or browse the artisan shops in and around The Shambles.

In September 2023, it will be 15 years since the donation of the three Historic House Hotels (including Middlethorpe Hall) to the National Trust. All three country houses warmly welcome guests to stay, to dine in the restaurants, to enjoy afternoon tea, or to arrange health and beauty treatments in the Spas.

Middlethorpe Hall is an historic three hundred year old red brick and limestone house, influenced by Sir Christopher Wren, set in acres of gardens and parkland. The hotel is located next to York Racecourse, so the place to be on race days. Enjoy a drink in the fine drawing room, a meal in the panelled dining room, followed by a stroll through the varied gardens.

Middlethorpe Hall has been elegantly decorated in the manner of the 18th Century and furnished with antiques and fine paintings, so that its look and ambiance is that of a well-kept, well-furnished private country house rather than a 29 bedroom Hotel (ten rooms and suites in the house, and nineteen in the adjacent 18th Century courtyard). Middlethorpe Hall welcomes families with children over six years of age and selected rooms also welcome dogs by prior consent.

Book dinner at Middlethorpe Hall and dine on award-winning British cuisine. The 1699 oak panelled dining room provides the perfect setting to enjoy the contemporary take on traditional British food. Head Chef Ashley Binder’s carefully designed dinner ‘Tasting Menu’ with paired wines offers a gourmet experience, while dishes are individually priced on the ‘a la carte’ dinner menu.

Relax at the Spa. Built behind the façade of two listed Edwardian cottages, Middlethorpe Spa is home to three treatment rooms, an indoor swimming pool, spa bath, steam room, sauna and club room.

Inside the hotel, learn about one of the hall’s most famous residents. Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, the famous 18th century diarist who lived at Middlethorpe Hall. Lady Mary Wortley-Montagu, moved into Middlethorpe Hall in August 1713. Famous for introducing her knowledge of the Ottoman practice of inoculation against smallpox to the UK, it was in later life that she was finally praised for introducing the practice here. A large painting of Lady Mary greets guests as they climb the staircase to their suites including the Lady Mary suite.

Celebrate the life of Fanny Wilkinson the first female landscape gardener in the UK who lived at Middlethorpe Hall. This pioneer gardener was the eldest child of Dr Matthew Wilkinson, a leading Manchester physician and the second husband of Frances Barlow, from whom he inherited Middlethorpe Hall. As Fanny explained, ‘When my father died (in 1878) we went to live at our own place, near York (Middlethorpe Hall), and there I began to devote myself to gardening in a practical way’. A York Civic Trust blue plaque was unveiled in the walled garden in 2022.

Middlethorpe Hall offers the perfect setting to enjoy the best of the country and city.
