10 Copenhagen Moments Staying in Vesterbro at the Andersen Hotel

Sustainability, architecture, design, food and cycling make Copenhagen a unique city break

Copenhagen is Denmark’s buzzing capital city famous for its happy people (Danes rank among the world’s happiest). This happiness is combined with beautiful architecture, a history of world-famous design, a thriving unique restaurant scene and of course the ability to explore everywhere on two wheels.

Here are 10 Copenhagen Moments for a first timer to this city:

  1. Explore Vesterbro
The former Meat Packing District has evolved beautifully making use of large spaces which today feature galleries, independent boutiques, bars and restaurants with plenty of outdoor space. The area is cosy and homely but welcomes visitors with its arms wide open. Vesterbro is the top-pick district of urban Copenhageners too meaning this is no tourist trap!
  2. Hop on a bicycle
Copenhagen is best explored on two wheels. It is the best bike city in the world. In 2022 the city hosted the Tour de France Grand Départ. Copenhagen is very much a city made for bikes – and the bridges are no exception. Two iconic bridges are The Bicycle Snake: Iconic modern bike bridge on Copenhagen’s harbourside and The Inner Harbour Bridge: Pedestrian and bike bridge in Nyhavn.
  3. Visit the Design Museum
Summer 2022 saw the reopening of the Designmuseum Danmark which is housed in one of Copenhagen’s finest rococo buildings, the former Royal Frederik’s Hospital. The museum has undergone a comprehensive renovation of the interior of this historic building across all exhibition and guest areas. The museum chose to close down in 2020 and start the major renovation and redevelopment that has secured the museum’s unique historic building framework for the future. The museum is currently in its 133rd year. The new café and museum shop is open to all. In addition to the exhibitions, the museum has renovated all its guest areas. The museum’s café and shop are redesigned by the award-winning OEO Studio with a new concept and more lounge areas. In the middle of the museum lies the open museum garden, a bit of breathing space in the heart of the city. The garden is used as an exhibition space and in the warmer months the museum café extends outside.
  4. Make sustainable choices
The Andersen Hotel offers a unique package inline with sustainability (see below) but Copenhagen is all about eco-friendly behaviour. In the warmer months hit the water. With a harbour clean enough to swim in it, public harbour baths are something that just needed to happen. And they are very popular among both locals and visitors. One of the most visited is located at Islands Brygge, right across the bridge from the city centre.
  5. Enjoy innovative cuisine
New Nordic Cuisine put Copenhagen on the culinary world map. It also sparked a revolution with its focus on local, organic ingredients in season. There are too many restaurants, cafes and street food places to list here and most are climate-friendly and offer natural wines.
  6. Functional architecture
Light, water, open spaces and sustainability are the key elements in the recent architectural boom in the Danish capital. The emergence of bold urban planning and world-class architecture is found in four key parts of the city, namely Ørestad, Nordhavn, city centre and not least along Copenhagen’s waterfront. The proximity to and reflection of the water in these new buildings are a common characteristic.
  7. Discover Royal Copenhagen
Copenhagen is home to one of the oldest monarchies in the world with a history tracing back to the Viking Age. Every day at 12:00 noon you can witness the changing of the Royal Danish Guard. The Guard leaves its barracks at Rosenborg Castle at approximately 11:30 and marches through the city to Amalienborg Palace, residence of the Danish monarch Queen Margrethe 2nd.
  8. Head to an upcoming neighbourhood
Sydhavnen is a less trodden path in Copenhagen and a neighbourhood that mixes nature, an architectural boom and authentic harbour-side living on the edge of the city.
  9. Take a day trip
Hans Christian Andersen’s hometown Odense is charming, walkable, full of culture and is an ideal day trip destination 1.5 hours from Copenhagen by train. Visit the new Hans Christian Andersen House: Be overwhelmed by architecture, fairytales and history on a different museum experience with audio guide.
  10. Stay at the leading independent boutique hotel
The independent Andersen Hotel in the Vesterbro neighbourhood of Copenhagen was recently refurbished. The hotel continues to innovate. The hotel operates a CONCEPT24 package which allows a late departure at no extra cost meaning the guest can keep the room for 24 hours, no matter the time of arrival. The hotel also recently unveiled CONCEPT GREEN. For guests staying for more than one night an option to decline housekeeping and opt for one of several experiences instead is available.
