Essaouira officially has around 320 days of sunshine per year making it an ideal year-round destination. This coastal destination offers tranquility and peace and visitors will encounter both bikinis and boards on the beach but also an exciting, UNESCO World Heritage Site, cosmopolitan medina. Essaouira, remains undiscovered with few direct flights and easy access from Marrakech by either private transfer or efficient coach service.
Morocco asks all to wear masks in certain settings and restaurants are open operating at reduced capacity to ensure social distancing. Entry into Morocco requires both a fully vaccinated certificate and a PCR test taken within the last 72 hours. This is subject to changes.
Set within a stunning botanical garden overlooking the Ksob River, the independently owned Le Jardin des Douars is Essaouira’s leading hotel. The ‘boutique’ hotel offers luxurious yet affordable accommodation nestled in the heart of the Essaouira hills only 12 minutes by shuttle to the medina. There are 19 bedrooms and 6 suites in total and 6 luxury villas with their own heated swimming pools.
Jardin des Douars has been busy planning its reopening and will follow government guidelines regarding public health measures to protect the entire population including tourists.
A new villa was unveiled this year and can host 14 guests. Like all villas, the new Saada (House of Happiness) offers true exclusivity with its own private heated pool, five bedrooms and maid service to include meals and housekeeping.
Guests and visitors can explore the lush gardens for hours. There are many varieties of tropical trees and plants. Maybe they will spot the various phoenix canariensis or the butia capitata, callistermon linearis or the sabal pamettos. If these are hard to find just ask one of the many gardeners. The resident tortoises and peacocks are sure to also highlight hidden parts of the gardens as they roam freely around Jardin des Douars adding to the unique charm of this property with views of argan-studded hills.
The hotel’s facilities include two outdoor heated pools, three dining areas including a large open plan restaurant, a ‘couples’ dining room and alfresco dining on the terrace. Other facilities include a hammam and spa where treatments are offered using Argan oils. A new outdoor bar has also been unveiled allowing for all meals to be taken alfresco with plenty of social distancing.
Essaouira’s medina is smaller than those in other Moroccan cities meaning guests can explore and shop without getting lost and with few people around. Close to the medina is the famous port. Essaouira’s outdoor fish grill stands are a lively option for lunch. Located here at the port, the laid-back stands sit side-by-side and offer a truly unique dining experience. Visitors simply select from a selection of freshly caught fish, this is then cooked on the grill and served with salad and bread.
Guests can head to the beach and relax or embark on a Kite Surfing lesson. Ocean Vagabond on the beach in Essaouira, is one of the coolest and most affordable places to enjoy lunch at whilst watching the waves. The laid-back terrace is the perfect backdrop after a day learning to kite surf. Ocean Vagabond offer several kite surf options including group, couple and private lessons. The winds that blow on Essaouira bay provide the ideal atmosphere for beginners.
Essaouira and Morocco are looking forward to welcoming tourists again and Jardin des Douars offers the finest hospitality post lockdown this summer.
