Bodysgallen Hall - 40 Years at the heart of Welsh Hospitality

  • Stay at this Grade 1 17th century house that has been skilfully and sympathetically restored
  • Explore the UNESCO World Heritage site of Conwy Castle close to Bodysgallen Hall
  • Spend time in over 220 Acres of Gardens and Parkland at Bodysgallen Hall

Bodysgallen Hall was rescued for restoration and conversion by Historic House Hotels and opened as a country house hotel in 1981. Bodysgallen Hall was later donated to the National Trust in 2008 and continues to be managed by Historic House Hotels.

Bodysgallen Hall is situated south of Llandudno in north Wales with spectacular views of Snowdonia and Conwy castle. The key to the origin or the present house at Bodysgallen is the construction of Conwy castle. This famous fortress was designed to master the wild mountain areas of Snowdonia. It seems beyond doubt that the tower at Bodysgallen  Hall was built as a watchtower for Conwy castle to command the slopes south-west of the low-lying castle against surprise attacks.

Today, guests enter the oldest part of the house, the main hall, above which is the Drawing Room featuring a beautiful fireplace. Here guests will find the 17th century coats of arms of the Mostyns, Wynns and Vaughans (previous owners), which are also found in the stained glass windows in the Dining Room and main stairwell.

The gardens and parkland at Bodysgallen Hall are often referred to as the finest of any hotel in Wales. Bodysgallen Hall is surrounded by over 220 acres of its own parkland and beautiful gardens – both manicured and natural. The gardens include a rare 17th century parterre of box hedges filled with sweet-scented herbs, a rockery with a cascade, a walled rose garden, and several follies. Several woodland walks enhance the outdoor experience. Search out the Gothic Tower within the woodland and the Obelisk located on top of Ffrith Hill. An additional highlight is that of a kitchen garden providing the freshest of ingredients for the dining menus. There is also an abundance of seasonal foliage for the in-house arrangements.

Dining is a true treat in this setting. Served in the oak panelled Hall, Library or Drawing Room, guests can enjoy traditional Welsh afternoon tea served in front of an open fireplace. Guests can also hide away in the crocodile alcove on the first floor, ideal for tete a tete over coffee or a glass of Champagne. The award-winning Dining Room holds 3 AA Rosettes, with imaginative Welsh food paired with a diverse wine list.

Located just a short walk from the hotel, the Spa houses a large indoor swimming pool with spa bath, gymnasium, six spa treatment rooms, Club Room and a relaxation room. The qualified therapists provide beauty and well-being treatments using products by Aromatherapy Associates, Environ and Jessica.

For more private space at Bodysgallen Hall, several cottages are also available. The Cottage Suites are clustered around a secluded courtyard garden, whilst rambling roses adorn the stone walls, and the cottage doorways.

Conwy and Llandudno stretch along the North Wales coast with Bodysgallen Hall, the leading hotel in the region, offering breathtaking views of this magical part of Wales. This is the ideal hotel to explore this part of Wales. Visit Conwy highlight the entire area including both Conwy and Llandudno and their website showcases further information.

Conwy is one of Britain’s best-preserved medieval towns. Visitors can enjoy well-preserved ancient walls, the most intact in Europe, which enclose a town of narrow cobbled streets full of historic buildings. Conwy Castle, a World Heritage Site, was a key part of the ‘iron ring’ of fortresses built around Snowdonia in the 13th century by Edward I to contain the Welsh. The views from the battlements, with the mountains of Snowdonia one way, the Conwy Estuary the other, are stunning. It is from here that the entire town comes into perspective, ringed by a circuit of walls over three-quarters of a mile long and guarded by no less than 22 towers.

Llandudno’s appearance is down to the fact that, unlike most other resorts, it has remained largely unchanged for over a century. There’s a pier (the longest in Wales) and Punch and Judy, donkey rides on the beach and canopied shopping streets just behind the prom. Put simply, Llandudno is a classic of its kind. Llandudno’s sense of harmony extends to its geography. The main North Shore beach is perfectly framed by two headlands, the Great Orme and Little Orme. Over the former – linked by a spectacular Marine Drive carved into the sea-cliff, you’ll find a second beach, the West Shore. One of the UK’s best contemporary art galleries can be found behind a gold-spired Edwardian façade. MOSTYN hosts a shifting programme of exhibitions that showcase the best in contemporary art and craft from Wales and beyond. There’s also a café and stylish shop.

In 2008, Bodysgallen Hall part of Historic House Hotels Ltd and all its interests became the property of the National Trust, by donation, with all profits henceforward benefiting the houses and the charity. This was the largest gift the National Trust had ever received. Each stay, meal and spa experience support the National Trust. All annual profits generated from the three hotel operations directly support the Trust’s ongoing work. The hotels operate as a self-sufficient commercial hotel operation under the existing management of Historic House Hotels. It is a unique and beneficial relationship, although not part of the standard member offer, which offers much value to the National Trust through raising funds to support the ongoing work of Historic House Hotels and the charity.

Bodysgallen Hall welcomes families with children over six years of age, and selected suites and cottages welcome dogs when arranged at the time of booking.

Bodysgallen Hall has gradually evolved over the centuries from modest hamlet to a large and comfortable country house, with restored and converted outbuildings, surrounded by one of the finest Arts and Crafts gardens in Wales.
