A rewarding city break in Copenhagen staying at the Andersen Hotel

After a difficult year, Copenhagen offers the perfect city break backdrop that pleases many travellers including design-fanatics, foodies and culture fans

As tourists emerge from global lockdowns, many are keen to gently ease their way back into exploring a city and Copenhagen offers the perfect combination of outdoor and indoor activities at a gentle pace. Many of the city’s attractions are within walking or cycling distance.

Copenhagen is a green city with bikes outnumbering cars. There are bike lanes, bike highways and bike bridges. Copenhagen is often described as the world’s best cycle friendly city and is easily explored on two wheels with unique infrastructure that specifically keeps cyclists in mind. Andersen Hotel offer guests bike hire for use throughout their stays.

Copenhagen is the capital of New Nordic Cuisine. This foodie movement focuses on purity, freshness and simplicity including a natural wine focus. There are restaurants that cater to a wide variety of tastes and this city currently holds 18 Michelin stars.

Denmark is a bit like a fairy tale with one of the oldest royal families in the world. There are also plenty of castles, palaces and gardens in and around Copenhagen to explore including the residence of the Danish monarch.

Copenhagen is Europe’s design capital and this is not new. From Arne Jacobsen’s Egg Chair to the Royal Danish Opera House, Copenhagen offers both classic design icons and modern architectural wonders.

The love of freedom and the freedom to love: Copenhagen is a city for all kinds of people and a long-time frontrunner for LGBT+ issues.

This is a happy country and the Danes have been voted the happiest people in the world many times. Denmark also gave the world “hygge” translated as cosiness, created by ideal surroundings.

You are never far from water in Copenhagen and in the summer you can take a dip (see below) and throughout the year canal tours are available.

  • Get acquainted with Vesterbro, home to the Andersen Hotel. The popular neighbourhood is equally cool and authentic while mixing family living with varied dining, hip nightlife, fashion boutiques and art galleries.
  • Amalienborg Palace is a must visit for anyone with a taste for royal history and the life of Denmark’s royal family who still resides inside the palace.
  • The Botanical Garden is located in the centre of Copenhagen. The garden covers an area of 10 hectares and is particularly noted for its extensive complex of historical glasshouses dating from 1874. The garden is open for the public.
  • The King’s Garden in Copenhagen was laid out during the reign of King Christian IV in connection to his pleasure Palace. The gardens are the country’s oldest royal gardens.
  • With a harbour clean enough to swim in it, public harbour baths are very popular among both locals and visitors. One of the most visited is located at Islands Brygge, right across the bridge from the city centre.
  • Tivoli Gardens amusement park in Copenhagen is also a must for all visitors to the city, young and old. The central location of the more than 175-year old park adds an extra dimension to this unique place.
  • Life at the waters edge in Nordhavn. From brand-spanking new architecture to top-notch bathing and eating in the sky, Nordhavn is a hot-spot for impressive architecture, design studios and new gastronomy.
  • For a truly Danish food experience, at lunch time enjoy the renowned smørrebrød (open faced sandwich). But at dinner you should treat yourself to some other Danish classic dishes too.

Karen Nedergaard (pictured) is behind both the Absalon and Andersen hotels which have been in her family for over 80 years. Both hotels were fully refurbished and Karen employs a large team of professionals ready to assist in setting up memorable stays in Copenhagen.

Award-winning boutique Andersen Hotel is home to 69 bedrooms and suites. The hotel also features a small courtyard and large lobby area. The hotel offers a daily complimentary ‘Wine Hour’ between 5pm and 6pm to all guests.

The hotel has a strong design story with bold designs including wallpapers and fabrics by the UK’s Designers Guild. Furniture across the hotels is from a selection of Danish designers. The hotel operates a CONCEPT24 package which allows a late departure at no extra cost meaning the guest can keep the room for 24 hours, no matter the time of arrival. The hotel also offers a CONCEPT GREEN promotion. For guests staying for more than one night an option to decline housekeeping and opt for one of several experiences instead is available.
